Biological Solutions for Efficient Organic Waste Treatment
Managing manure and organic waste is a major challenge for chicken and hog farms, food and dairy processors, and agricultural operations. Improper management can lead to odor problems, excess solids buildup, slow decomposition, and nutrient loss.
Modern biological technologies provide a sustainable way to accelerate decomposition, improve compost quality, and reduce environmental impact. Using specialized microbial formulations, manure and organic materials can be transformed into stable, nutrient-rich soil amendments while minimizing operational issues.
At Chemtech International, we offer advanced microbial solutions designed to support efficient manure treatment, composting, and organic waste management.
The Challenges of Manure and Organic Waste
Manure, agricultural residues, and organic waste streams often contain complex organic compounds such as cellulose, proteins, fats, and lignin that naturally take a long time to break down.
Without proper biological activity, operators may face problems such as:
- Strong hydrogen sulfide and ammonia odors
- Slow decomposition of organic material
- Surface crust and bottom solids accumulation
- Reduced nutrient value of compost or manure fertilizer
- Increased handling and storage challenges
Environmental factors such as oxygen levels, moisture, and the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio also affect the speed and effectiveness of composting.
For optimal composting performance, the recommended C:N ratio is approximately 25:1 to 30:1, with moisture levels around 40–65% and sufficient aeration to support microbial activity.
How Biological Composting Works
Composting is a natural biological process where microorganisms break down organic materials into stable compounds that improve soil health.
The process typically progresses through three phases:
- Mesophilic Phase: Initial microbial growth begins the decomposition of simple organic compounds.
- Thermophilic Phase: Temperatures rise above 40°C, accelerating the breakdown of proteins, fats, and plant materials while destroying pathogens.
- Curing Phase: The compost stabilizes and remaining organic matter continues to mature into nutrient-rich soil amendments.
A diverse microbial ecosystem is essential for this process. Bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes work together to degrade organic compounds and convert nutrients into forms that plants can easily absorb.
Featured Product: Microbe-Lift IND

Microbe-Lift MT is a high-performance microbial formulation designed to accelerate the breakdown of complex organic materials in manure, compost, and organic waste systems.
The product contains a consortium of beneficial bacteria and enzymes capable of degrading difficult organic compounds such as cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin, proteins and long-chain fatty acids
MICROBE-LIFT MT is formed of natural, organic-based humates and humic constituents, which significantly speed microbial response to difficult-to-degrade organic matter, resulting in significant reduction in sludge volumes through rapid oxidation of many slow-to-degrade compounds.
By enhancing biological activity, the formulation helps shorten composting time and improve overall process stability. It also helps control foul odors by promoting aerobic decomposition and reducing the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and ammonia.
Key Benefits
- Accelerates decomposition of fats, proteins, cellulose and other organic waste compounds
- Reduces odors caused by ammonia and sulfur compounds
- Support pathogen reduction through elevated temperatures
- Enhances nutrient retention in finished compost
- Produces higher-value soil amendments
- Improves stability and regulates temperature throughout the composting process
Applications:
- Dairy farms
- Poultry/chicken farms
- Hog/swine farms
- Agricultural composting facilities
- Organic waste processing plants
- Meat processing facilities
- Biosolid composting systems
- Food waste composting operations

Sustainable Organic Waste Management
Effective manure management and composting are essential for sustainable agriculture and livestock rearing. By improving biological activity, operators can reduce environmental impact, improve fertilizer value, and create beneficial soil products from organic waste streams.
Biological and eco-friendly solutions from Chemtech offer a practical and environmentally responsible solution for transforming manure and organic residues into valuable resources.
Case Study: Water Treatment for Hog & Chicken Farms
Problem:
A twenty-year-old hog farm in southeast Georgia was dealing with over 5.5 million gallons of waste lagoon that had gone septic. The lagoon was in critical state, it had no presence of biological activities and the odors were extremely offensive, making it impossible for personnel to perform their duties due to eye irritation and respiratory problems.
Similarly, a chicken processing plant was facing high BOD levels in its two aeration ponds, which had over 18 million gallons of wastewater in total.
Solution:
Chemtech advised a single application 250 gallons of a customized product to treat the hog farm’s waste lagoon. The product was also applied in the cleaning process of the barn via pressure wash system.
The two ponds at the chicken processing plant were treated with 75 and 175 gallons of the product, respectively.
Result:
14 days after the initial treatment, the hog farm’s lagoon was showing signs of biological activities. After 21 days, the lagoon was functioning properly – biological activities were extremely active and the water had returned to a healthier pink color. The plant personnel had also reported significant reductions in eye irritation and respiratory side effects, and the odors were completely eliminated.
Similarly, the BOD problems at the chicken processing plant were solved after one single treatment. 30 days after the initial treatment, the BOD levels were on average reduced by 60-65%.
